Anyone who wonders about the popularity of the vintage racing movement should have been in Daytona on Saturday, Feb 16. For the first time in decades, the town allowed race cars to run on the old beach-road course. They went two miles south on the paved highway A-1-A, turned left onto the beach and headed north for two more miles.

Thousands turned out to see the old cars, some of them watching from their condo porches, others from the beach side and still others on the sidewalk beside the highway.

This car is a barn find. Believed to have run in upstate New York, it’s owned and was driven by Ohio’s Gene Steele. The car is virtually as found except for the siren Steel installed under the hood.

Look at all those fans in the attached photo!
